Web10 jun. 2016 · Abstract. The most-developed area of evolutionary aesthetics is the field known as Literary Darwinism: the use of evolutionary principles to explain literature. This chapter examines three examples of Literary Darwinism: evolutionary analyses of Flaubert’s Madame Bovary, of Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray, and Homer’s Iliad. Literary Darwinists use concepts from evolutionary biology and the evolutionary human sciences to formulate principles of literary theory and interpret literary texts. They investigate interactions between human nature and the forms of cultural imagination, including literature and its oral antecedents.
